Dionisie PECURARIU (1876, Vinerea, Alba County - 1960, Bucharest)
Artistic education: Kunstgewerbeschule, Vienna (1896-1900) Târgu Jiu Ceramics School, Artistic Department (1902-1906) The author of the interwar coats of arms of Greater Romania and founder of the discipline of archaeological drawing in Romania, Dionisie PECURARIU (PĂCURARIU) held the position of draftsman at the National Museum of Antiquities between 1909 and 1960, where he “worked continuously at the drawing board, reproducing from nature, in pen and color, the archaeological materials discovered through excavations or found in museums.
A technical collaborator of Grigore Tocilescu, Pecurariu was used from the beginning in the research in Dobrogea and the excavations at Adamclisi. He was the trusted man who supervised the archaeological sites in Dobrogea, such as Adamclisi or Histria." (Ana-Felicia Diaconu, Dionisie Pecurariu (March 1, 1876 – April 4, 1960). After the First World War, the Museum of Antiquities concentrated all its archaeological activity, reflected in the publications it published, including Dacia. Recherches et decouvertes archeologiques en Roumanie, the technical and artistic part of which was entrusted to Pecurariu. To the same extent, he made sustained efforts to research archaeological materials in museums, such as those in Transylvania, to choose and draw materials for Getica, Vasile Pârvan thanked him in the preface to his work. (O protoistorie a Daciei, Bucharest, 1926, p. 2.)
Through everything he did, Dionisie Pecurariu represents “a model of ethical behavior in the field of art, based on effort and study, discipline and talent, as well as attachment to the values of national culture”, who deserves to be placed in a place of honor among Romanian artists. (Marcela Focşa, Corneliu N. Mateescu,Despre arta noastră populară şi valorificarea ei , in “Revista Muzeelor și Monumentelor”, 5, 1982, Muzee, p. 74.)
